Message from the Acting Executive Director

Master's Degree in Political Management

We have seen some extraordinary changes during the twenty-first century in the way the candidates are elected to office and the way issues and ideas are advocated. The old days of party bosses and the old-boys network are long gone: today, thanks to the extraordinary changes in technology, social networking, mobile phone campaigns, blogging and twittering, and campaign websites have become important, even revolutionary, ways to reach out to voters. We have seen a revolution in micro-targeting, in computer-assisted research, Internet-based polling, and using political apps on smart phones.

GW's Graduate School of Political Management is dedicated to helping its students and alumni succeed in the high-stake world of professional campaign management, issues advocacy, lobbying, public relations, and political leadership. We focus on new communication techniques needed to reach voters and specialized audiences. We also continue to teach the basics of campaigning, message building, brand identification, leadership, targeting, political research, and polling. Many of our faculty are at the leading edge of campaign management, advocacy, and communication, and have applied their skills in political campaigns at the highest level in the U.S. and throughout the world. At the Graduate School of Political Management, we also give you a solid grounding in campaign and election ethics. We are firmly convinced that our graduates must have a thorough grounding in the ethics and moral considerations of campaign management; it is not enough to win, and win at any cost.

Now in our twenty-fourth year, the Graduate School of Political Management boasts more than 2,000 alumni working at all levels of government and politics, in Washington, in state capitals, and indeed, around the world.

We firmly believe that our programs--whether they are in legislative affairs, PAC management, public relations, or political management--represent the very best in graduate education in the field of applied politics. And we welcome you. Look us over and I think you will agree that we have many exciting opportunities and offerings available to you.

My best wishes,

Dennis W. Johnson, Ph.D.
